Questions for the Omaha Chiropractor

Omaha Chiropractic Questions

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is based on a simple but powerful premise: With a normally functioning spine and healthy nervous system, the body will naturally self-heal. Chiropractic care is a natural method of healthcare that centers on an "inside out" philosophy of treatment; rather than simply treat the symptoms, chiropractors focus on the body's own ability to overcome disease and distress. Your spine is your body's lifeline; it controls feeling movement, and function throughout the body.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Extremely. Chiropractic care has an impeccable record of safety; it is a conservative and natural approach to wellness that avoids the prescription of addictive drugs, or the incorporation of invasive surgeries. Not convinced? Compare malpractice rates between chiropractors and other healthcare professionals. You'll be relieved to find that the rate of chiropractic malpractice is a fraction of that among other healthcare professionals.

What might I expect during my initial visit to a chiropractor?

During your first visit, you'll meet with the chiropractor to discuss and document your health history, and then he or she will perform a physical examination (focusing on the spine). It's possible, of course, that other examinations or tests, such as X-rays, may be incorporated. The decision will be made: Is chiropractic care appropriate? If so, and if the patient wishes, a treatment plan will be outlines. Follow-up visits, during which the chiropractor will administer spinal adjustments, can be scheduled — the goal being, to increase the range of motion and restore total health.

Can a person who had back surgery see a chiropractor?

Yes. The unfortunate reality is that up to half of those who undergo spinal surgery revert to their original symptoms with time. Their chances of needing additional surgery skyrocket; this is known as "Failed Back Surgery Syndrome," which can be extremely painful, not to mention costly and inconvenient. Chiropractic care is thought to prevent repeated back surgeries.

Do children need chiropractic care?

Spinal trauma can occur at birth, and so many parents bring their newborns to be examined for vertebral subluxation. (Chiropractic adjusting procedures are, of course, adapted for the baby's spine.) Sometimes health problems that emerge in adulthood can be prevented by early examination by a chiropractor. Most children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and grow to become healthier than others their age.

Do chiropractors treat conditions other than back pain?

Chiropractors are trained to provide treatment for a wide range of symptoms, from soft-tissue disorders to dysmenorrhea (painful menses). Additionally, conditions of the joints of the extremities — like the ankle, knee, and shoulder can also be addressed though chiropractics. There are many, lesser-known symptoms a chiropractor may treat — symptoms like ulcers, migraine headaches, and children's ear infections. By first addressing spinal abnormalities, chiropractors have helped thousands of individuals overcome their symptoms and lead healthy, happy lives.

Do I have to see my medical doctor before I see a chiropractor?

No. Doctors of chiropractic (DCs) are primary healthcare providers "The DC can provide all three levels of primary care interventions and therefore is a primary care provider, as are MDs and DOs. The DC's office is a direct access portal of entry to the full scope of service," states The Center for Studies in Health Policy.

How does chiropractic work?

Your body, when treated properly, contains within it the innate ability to heal itself.
Chiropractic works by restoring this ability. When the nervous system is functioning properly, all cells, tissues, and organs of your body will naturally resist disease and injury. The chiropractor works to remove interferences (misaligned vertebrae, subluxations) to your nervous system. With improved spinal function comes improved nervous system function. A healthy spine and a healthy lifestyle are your keys to exceptional health!

How large is the chiropractic profession?

Chiropractic is the fastest-growing, and second-largest, primary healthcare profession.
The Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards maintains that there are approximately 81,000 doctors of chiropractic (DCs) in active practice in the United States alone. According to the Bureau of the Census, there is approximately one doctor of chiropractic for every 5,100 citizens.

Is it okay to see a chiropractor while pregnant?

It's always a good time for a better-functioning nervous system. Plus, pregnant mothers often find that chiropractic adjustments actually improve their pregnancy and ease delivery for themselves and their baby. As always, adjusting methods are adapted to a patient's size, age, weight, and condition of health.
