Chiropractic Care and Sports Injuries

Whether you are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, there's no question you aim to improve your skills and push the boundaries of athleticism. As the science of sport increases, so do our performances. Each year, the level of play seems to get better and better across every level of sport. While pushing yourself to the limit is certainly rewarding, one must also consider the consequences of injury. Certainly there are things you can do to minimize injuries – but in most cases, injuries cannot be avoided. The manner in which the injury is treated is critical in getting back on the playing field or inside the gymnasium as quickly as possible.

First and foremost, it is important to stretch and warm-up before playing any sport. While that seems obvious, it's amazing how many athletes avoid it! Most injuries are caused by athletes pushing themselves too far, too fast. How many times have you hurt yourself around the house picking up a box, moving something heavy, or reaching for something that is out of reach? The answer to that is – probably pretty often! While a household injury may seem out of context and would not be appear to be related to a sports injury, in all actuality, it really is. The injury occurs around your house because you go to do something strenuous before you are stretched, warmed-up, and ready to take on that particular physical activity.
Sports are no different, and countless athletes feel as though they are in great shape and can bypass the initial warm-up process. Or often times, you may feel as though you have properly stretched and warmed the body up – but are unaware of the actual length of time necessary to achieve this critical first step. The warm-up cycle does not happen in a matter of a few minutes – in reality, the warm-up process can take 10 to 15 minutes of consistent activity before you are truly ready to go full speed. Therefore, by definition, most people are not completely warmed up before pushing the body to its limits.

If you are hurt on the playing field, what are some great ways to get yourself back out there as quickly as possible? Chiropractic is an excellent method of dealing with sports injuries. With the combination of spinal manipulation to return vertebrae to their normal range of motion, and physical therapy to assist the supporting muscles, ligaments and tendons, the chiropractor can provide an extremely effective plan for a quick recovery. In addition, the need to rest the body is pivotal as well. The body requires time to heal, and combined with chiropractic treatment, recovery time can be minimized.

Once you are back on the field or on the court, it is important to learn from past mistakes. Therefore, your chiropractor can properly teach you methods of stretching and warm-up that will keep you from reinjuring yourself! More and more, professional athletes are utilizing Doctors of Chiropractic to increase their performance, and limit their down-time due to injuries. The chiropractor is well equipped to look at the body in its entirety, and provide proactive measures for athletes looking to push themselves to the limits. Regular chiropractic adjustments allow the body to heal from the constant breakdown occurring as a result of athletics. As the brains of the body, the nervous system needs a clear pathway in which to deliver signals from the brain – chiropractic adjustments allow the body to just that.

The chiropractor can also evaluate your diet and recommend the necessary supplements needed to keep your energy levels up on the ball field. Diet and nutrition are critical elements of your athletic performance, and should not be overlooked by any stretch of the imagination. If you think of your body as being a finely tuned car, isn't it critical to put the correct fuel into it? Physical activity quickly burns the body's fuel – and a lack of fuel means the well oiled machine that is your body is sure to run out of steam very quickly! Most chiropractors are experts in diet and nutrition, and can provide the right strategy for your dietary success.

All in all, enjoy your sporting activities and keep pushing yourself to the limit! Athletics are great for the mind, body and soul. They increase your heart rate, build strong muscles, and keep the mind sharp for all of life's endeavors. Just make sure you follow through on all of the necessary steps required before you take the field – and don't forget to enlist the help of a chiropractor. With the right steps in place, you will excel in your sport and be able to spend more time on the field enjoying it!
